Biography I am a translational clinical scientist whose group works on childhood arthritis and juvenile myositis. These serious autoimmune diseases can lead to severe pain, fatigue, joint and muscle damage, and long-term disability. Our research is driven by unsolved questions about the underlying causes of, and best treatments for, these serious childhood diseases. I lead a large multi-dimensional research programme, Childhood arthritis response to medication study, aiming to define immunological, genetic and psychological factors associated with response to treatment. We made seminal contributions to the discovery of new treatment targets in JIA, in particular IL-17 and Treg cells, and have introduced the first predictive biomarker of treatment response or risk of flare in JIA, into the clinic. I lead the large UK-wide JDM cohort study, which has defined biomarkers that predict specific complications, and showed that the combination of antibody and biopsy data (assessed by a standardised tool we designed, predict duration of treatment needed in this serious disease. I am Director of the first ever Centre for Adolescent Rheumatology, based at UCL, where our focus is to understand and treat arthritis and related inflammatory diseases in the adolescent and young adult age groups.
