BiographyAs Director of the Institute of Mental Health I am determined to promote pioneering research to improve mental health care and help people have a better quality of life. My own research has focused on improving dementia care, which includes the development and evaluation of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) an evidence-based group therapy for people with dementia, which improves cognition and quality of life and is cost effective. CST for dementia was one of 100 case studies in the 2016 RAND Europe analysis of the NIHR at 10 years stating the ‘development and adoption of cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) has led to important patient benefits and health system savings’. The NHS Institute for Innovations (2011) concluded that CST can save the NHS £54.9 million a year. CST is now widely used including in over two thirds of NHS memory services and in more than 20 countries worldwide.
