BiographyDavid Edwards is the Weston Professor of Neonatal Medicine, and was Chairman and Head of the Division of Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London (1998-2005). He is a Group Head in the Medical Research Council Clinical Sciences Centre at Hammersmith Hospital and Associate Director of the UKCRN Medicines for Children Research Network After graduating from Oxford, Professor Edwards spent a year as a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He trained at Guy's Hospital Medical School and studied Neonatology at University College London before moving to the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and Imperial College in 1993. David Edwards became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1986 and a Fellow in 1993, a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 1998, and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2002. In 2007 he won the Arvo Yllpo Quinquennial Gold Medal for his contribution to Neonatal Medicine, both in the discovery and introduction of treatment to reduce the incidence and severity of brain damage after birth asphyxia and in the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging for newborn infants.
