BiographyJohn Fisher is Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Director of the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering and Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Leeds. During the last twenty years he has grown the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering tenfold to be the largest medical engineering research centre in Europe, with over 100 doctoral researchers focusing on research and innovation in musculoskeletal disease. His personal research interests lie in the field of biotribology of joint replacements and tissue substitutions. He is the academic inventor of the ceramic in the metal hip which is now implanted in patients all over the world. He has undertaken research and development on numerous total joint replacements, identifying low wearing solutions which are now in clinical use. He has published over four hundred journal papers and supervised over 100 PhD students.
