BiographyPaul Dieppe works in rheumatology, health services research and medical education. Between 1978 and 1995 he led academic rheumatology at the University of Bristol, and he and his team became world leaders in osteoarthritis research. He then became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Bristol (1995-97). After that he was appointed Director of the MRC Health Services Research Collaboration (1997-2008). He has recently moved to the Peninsula Medical School as Chair of Clinical Education Research. His main research contributions have been in clinical aspects of osteoarthritis and its responses to therapy, the provision of total joint replacement, and the placebo response. He is using his NIHR Senior Investigator award to pursue his interest in the causes and effects of musculoskeletal pain in older people and the value of placebo therapy for this problem.  He is setting up a service at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, in conjunction with the orthopaedic surgery group and with embedded research projects, for people with pain in a joint in spite of having had a joint replacement.
