BiographyIan McKeith is Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the Institute for Ageing and Health, Newcastle University and from 2005-2015 was Director of the UK Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Clinical Research Network (DeNDRoN).  With an estimated 700,000 people in the UK with dementia, and set to double over the next generation (a new case occurs every three minutes), Ian McKeith’s research group at Newcastle University has helped define the different causes of dementia in old age.  This is done by:examining post-mortem brain tissue to seek evidence of different disease processes e.g Alzheimer’s, Lewy body, vasculardescribing the patterns of symptoms experienced by patients with these different brain changesdeveloping “biomarkers” including structural and functional imaging techniques to assist accurate lifetime diagnosis, and conducting clinical trials of new drugs in the different groups.   The Newcastle group’s work has changed methods of diagnosing and treating dementia internationally and contributed to the development of the first wave of effective treatments. The award of an NIHR Biomedical Research Centre on Ageing to Newcastle United Trust Hospitals and Newcastle University will provide added impetus to research on this important but until now under-funded topic.
