BiographyPhilip Conaghan holds the Chair of Musculoskeletal Medicine at the University of Leeds, is a Consultant Rheumatologist for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and is Deputy Director of the NIHR Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit. His major translational research interests are in the (often overlapping) areas of: · imaging and arthritides (pathogenesis and therapeutic response in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and osteoathritis) · outcomes research (including the psychometrics of tools) · osteoarthritis (especially pathogenesis and therapeutic interventions) He was inaugural Chair of the EULAR Standing Committee on Imaging and has been Chair of a Working Group of the OARSI-FDA Osteoarthritis Initiative. He is currently Imaging and Biomarker Lead for the international OMERACT group, and a founding member and President of the International Society for Musculoskeletal Imaging in Rheumatology. In the UK he is Chair of Arthritis Research UK's national Osteoarthritis & Crystal Diseases Clinical Studies Group, aiming to foster strategic national research, and was previously Chair of the UK NICE Osteoarthritis Guidelines Development Group. In Leeds he helped establish the Yorkshire Early Arthritis Register, a region-wide register of new RA patients. He has authored over 250 publications as peer-reviewed papers, review articles, book chapters and books.
