BiographyJane Blazeby studied Medicine at Bristol University and undertook higher surgical training in the South West of England before gaining an honorary consultant post and a MRC Clinician Scientist award in 2000 and a chair in surgery in 2006. Jane is interested in improving the way that randomised controlled trials in surgery are designed and conducted. She has had a long lasting interest in outcome measurement from the perspective of the patient as well as the health professional. She was chair of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Group between 2003 and 2006 and developed and validated a portfolio of patient reported outcome measures for surgical oncology. She is on the Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) management group. She directs the MRC ConDuCT-II (Collaboration and Innovation in Difficult randomised Controlled Trials in Invasive Interventions) Hub for Trials Methodology Research and the Royal College of England Surgical Trials Centre in Bristol. Jane believes that effective collaboration between surgeons and methodologists will improve the design and conduct of research in surgery which will contribute to raising standards of surgical practice in the UK and worldwide.
