BiographyProfessor Andrew Bush, MD FRCP FRCPCH, looks after children with chest illnesses, in particular really severe asthma, cystic fibrosis and other illnesses characterised by chronic infection, and rarities such as interstitial lung disease and congenital lung malformations. His multidisciplinary team has carried out trials of novel treatments in children with these conditions; and pioneered measurement of airway inflammation and scarring, in particular using tiny samples of the airway lining, leading to nearly 350 publications. His aim is to generate ideas at the bedside, collaborate with scientists to test the ideas in the laboratory, and bring the fruits of the collaboration back to the bedside to benefit sick children. His team has trained nearly 50 Academics and Clinical Consultants in the last 20 years, and he has supervised 24 research degrees (MD(Res) and PhD). He is joint Editor in Chief of Thorax, and has also edited several books in the speciality.
