BiographyBryan Williams is Chair of Medicine at UCL and Director of the NIHR UCL Hospitals Biomedical Research Centre. He is National Co-Chair of the Cardiovascular Speciality Group of the Comprehensive Research Network.He is also a consultant physician at UCLH with a specialist interest in the clinical management of complex hypertension.He was previously Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Clinical Division of Medicine at the University of Leicester 1996-2012. He is recognised internationally for his contributions in the field of hypertension. His research work is patient orientated, focussing on experimental medicine/mechanistic studies through to multi-centre clinical trials. His recent work has focussed on arterial mechanics/function and novel non-invasive methods to derive aortic haemodynamics and pressures for use as novel drug targets and in treatment stratification. This work is facilitated by international links with major research institutions, biotech SMEs and the Pharma industry. Professor Williams work in developing novel methods for the non-invasive assessment of aortic pressure was recognised in 2011 by the Times Higher Education Award for "Excellence in Innovation and Technology". He has extensive experience on national research boards, having previously been chairman of the MRC and DH Clinician Scientist awards panels and is currently a member of the NIHR Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) programme board which is focussed on translational research. Completing the translational loop from research to practice, he has been the clinical advisor to NICE on Hypertension since 2006 and was Chairman of the NICE Hypertension Guideline Development Group which reported in 2011.
