BiographyProfessor David Cunningham is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Head of the Gastrointestinal and Lymphoma Unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London and Surrey. He is also the Director of the Royal Marsden/Institute of Cancer Research NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and Director of Clinical Research. He is the Chair of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Oesophagogastric Subgroup. He is also Chair of the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board Specialist Advisory Committee in Medical Oncology and Chair of the London Cancer Alliance Medical Oncology Training Committee. He is a Committee member of the NCRI Upper GI Clinical Studies Group, NCRI High-grade Lymphoma sub-group and the NCRI Clinical Studies Group Chair’s Forum. He is a previous chair of the NCRI Upper GI Clinical Studies Group and a previous member of the NCRI Lymphoma Clinical Studies Group and the NCRN Operational Steering Group. He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in June 2011. Professor Cunningham is a faculty member of the Institute of Cancer Research. He is a member of numerous professional societies including the British Association for Cancer Research, the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). His previous commitments have included a 4 year term as a member of the ASCO Education Committee 2004 and 2005. He was also member of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Gastrointestinal Cancer Symposium Program Committee (ASCO). He is a member of the Scientific Committee for the ESMO Congress in partnership with European Society for Cancer Research, Madrid, September 2017 and also a member of the Scientific Committee for ESMO 18th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer, Barcelona, June/July 2016. Professor Cunningham is on the Editorial Board of Annals of Oncology, British Journal of Cancer, Clinical Colorectal Cancer and Current Colorectal Cancer Reports. He is also Editor in Chief of the Elsevier Resource Centre, Advances in Gastrointestinal Cancer. Professor Cunningham’s main research interests are clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancer and lymphoma, along with the development of translational research and novel molecular therapies.
