BiographyWillem Ouwehand is Professor of Experimental Haematology and a clinical researcher at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. He obtained both his medical degree and PhD in 1984 at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Willem also holds an honorary Consultant Haematologist appointment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and NHS Blood and Transplant. His research team specialises in studies on the formation and function of platelets with a focus on their role in maintaining haemostasis and thrombus formation in the arterial circulation. These studies are relevant to human health because platelets are key cells underlying thrombus formation after plaque rupture in arteries and contribute to heart attacks and stroke, respectively. He is married with Sally with whom he has two daughters and he lives in London and Cambridge.
