BiographyAfter training in medicine in New Zealand and Australia, John Danesh trained in epidemiology in London and Oxford with the support of a Rhodes Scholarship. Since 2001, John Danesh has been Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine and Head of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge. He is also the Director of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit and Director of the Centre for Genetic Epidemiology at the Strangeways Laboratory as well as being an Honorary Consultant of the Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He has published over 180 papers that have so far attracted a total of ~28,000 citations. In 2011, he was awarded a European Research Council Advanced Investigator Award, the first epidemiologist from the UK to receive this prestigious pan-European award across all scientific disciplines. In 2012, he was awarded a British Heart Foundation Personal Chair. He serves in senior roles for: major research initiatives (eg, he is a member of the Steering Committee of UK Biobank), academic journals (eg, he is an associate editor of the European Journal of Epidemiology), funding agencies (eg, he is the deputy chairman of the Wellcome Trust’s Genetics/Populations panel and a member of the UK Medical Research Council Population and Systems Medicine Board), and industry (eg, he serves on the international scientific advisory boards of Merck, Novartis, Pfizer and Sanofi).
