BiographyIan Bruce is Professor of Rheumatology at the Arthritis Research UK Epidemiology Unit, Institute of Inflammation and Repair, University of Manchester and The Kellgren Centre for Rheumatology, Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust. He is currently Medical Director of the NIHR/ Wellcome Trust Manchester Clinical Research Facility and the Manchester Centre Academic Lead for the NIHR Translational Research Partnership in Joint and related inflammatory conditions. Prof Bruce is also Chair of the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) group. He qualified from Queen’s University Belfast in 1988 and obtained his MRCP in 1991. His initial rheumatology training was under the mentorship of Dr Aubrey Bell (Musgrave Park Hospital) and he completed his MD thesis on systemic vasculitis in 1995. From 1996-1998 he was a Lupus Fellow at the University of Toronto with Professors Murray Urowitz and Dafna Gladman. From 1998 to the present he has worked in Manchester. His major clinical interest is connective tissue diseases and his academic interest is in cardiovascular outcomes in rheumatic diseases especially SLE and RA. He is Chief Investigator on several ongoing prospective SLE studies and he also leads a study examining risk factors for atherosclerosis before and after the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. His currently research income includes grants from NIHR, MRC, Arthritis Research UK, Lupus UK, The Canadian Institute of Health Sciences, Genzyme/Sanofi, Roche Pharmaceuticals and UCB Pharmaceuticals.
