BiographyLucilla Poston is Head of Division of Women's Health at King’s College London and research lead for the Women's Health Academic Centre, King's Health Partners. She holds the Tommy's Charity Chair of Maternal and Fetal Health and is Director of the Maternal and Fetal Research Unit based at St Thomas’ Hospital. Trained as a scientist who has worked throughout her career in translationsal research, she is responsible for a multidisciplinary team of scientists and health professionals, which through a translational approach, aims to improve the health of pregnant women and their children. Recent clinical studies have included a trial of metronidazole in women at risk of pre-term labour (PREMET) showing that this commonly used drug may have adverse influences on outcome, and another (About Teenage Eating or ATE) which has highlighted how the poor nutritional status of pregnant teenagers, particularly poor folate intake, is associated with low birth weight. In a current NIHR funded programme, Professor Poston’s team is developing an intervention to improve pregnancy outcome in obese pregnant women (the UPBEAT trial).
