BiographyHugh Markus qualified in pre-clinical Medicine at Cambridge University and then clinical Medicine at Oxford University. He trained in general medicine at Oxford and Nottingham before training in Neurology in London. He was appointed to Kings College London as a Senior Lecturer and then Reader in Neurology before taking up the Foundation Chair in Neurology at St George's in 2000. He is an academic clinical neurologist with a specialist interest in Stroke. He led development of the St George's comprehensive stroke service and now work clinically in acute stroke, as well as running specialist clinics for genetic forms of stroke (especially CADASIL) and subcortical stroke. His research is in applying genetic and imaging (both MRI and transcranial Doppler ultrasound) techniques to investigate the pathogenesis of stroke and develop new diagnostic and treatment approaches. He is involved in a number of treatment trials in stroke, as CI or on the steering committee.
