BiographySteve Halligan is Professor of Radiology at University College London and Honorary Consultant Radiologist at University College Hospital, London. His clinical interests focus on gastrointestinal imaging, notably novel diagnosis of colorectal cancer, and he has a research interest in anal imaging – especially incontinence and fistula disease. His work in fistula-in-ano has helped in MR imaging becoming generally accepted for pre-operative investigation worldwide. Professor Halligan enjoys much fruitful collaboration with researchers in many other disciplines and NIHR funding has been pivotal in achieving this. He was awarded the first NIHR Programme Grant in clinical radiology for work based on computer-assisted diagnosis of colon cancer. In particular, NIHR funding has stabilised collaborations in statistical methodology, health psychology, image perception and health economics that are often difficult to fund independently. He is passionate about the attractions of academic radiology as a career choice for young doctors and has mentored several young researchers who are now successful in their own right. He is delighted to play his part in the reinvigoration of the discipline that is currently underway following recent funding reforms.
