BiographySteven Sacks is Director of the Medical Research Council’s Centre for Transplantation and Head of Kidney and Transplant Medicine at King’s College London. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He has brought together - in a single centre - researchers and clinicians with expertise in transplantation across a wide range of disciplines enabling progress in turning laboratory findings into new treatment and diagnostic aids. The main focus of his research is how inflammation so profoundly affects the results of transplantation. Associated interests include whether defensive proteins with natural ability to curb inflammation can be manipulated for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes Professor Sacks' work also shows how bacteria in the urinary tract overcome these defences, opening up new possibilities for prevention of infection. He has a long-standing interest in the ethical regulation of research with particular expertise in 'first-in-man' studies. Policy work features the advancement of health research through involvement with the Medical Research Council and Arthritis and Rheumatism Council.
