BiographyPhilippa Garety is Professor of Clinical Psychology, Institute of Psychiatry, and Clinical Director and Joint Lead, Psychosis Clinical Academic Group, South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.  Her career has always been that of a clinician-researcher, combining clinical psychology practice with research into cognitive and emotional processes in psychosis, directed, ultimately, towards the goal of improving psychological treatments. Research initially focused on reasoning processes in delusions; in 1988, she was the first to identify the 'jumping to conclusions' reasoning bias, since demonstrated to be consistently associated with delusions in psychosis. Research in cognitive processes in delusions led to the development of therapeutic approaches for psychotic symptoms. She was one a small number of UK-based clinical researchers who initiated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for psychosis and has since conducted a number of influential clinical trials. Professor Garety has developed and evaluated new services for people with psychosis. Recently she co-led the first UK Randomised Control Trial which demonstrated clinical and social benefits of a community-based early intervention service, incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She has also served as psychological interventions lead for the NICE Schizophrenia Guideline.
