BiographyJill Manthorpe is Professor of Social Work at King’s College London and Director of the Social Care Workforce Research Unit - a Department of Health-funded unit that provides research-based evidence to inform policy and practice. The social care workforce is large: estimated at 1.8 million people with at least 30,000 employers. This makes research on this topic complicated and intriguing. The subject is also important to individuals, families, communities and society. The Unit works with a range of other researchers; expertise includes people with experience of using social and health care services. Part of its role involves translating research into practice. The Unit is the hub for a wide variety of professional learning opportunities across London and beyond. In addition to the workforce strand of its activity, the Unit specialises in research subjects that span social care and health services: particular adult safeguarding, risk, dementia, professional regulation and inter-agency working. Current workforce studies relate to support work, personalisation, international/agency workers and social work education.
