BiographyDeenan Pillay is Professor of Virology at UCL, Head of the Research Department of Infection and Honorary Consultant Virologist at University College London Hospital. He is Director of the NIHR UCLH/UCL Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre, and is also Research Director and Infectious Diseases Programme Director for UCL Partners. His particular interests are in antiviral treatment and antiviral drug resistance. He initiated and now chairs the UK HIV drug resistance database, which is a major source of research and surveillance data on the emergence and spread of HIV with resistance to one or more antiretroviral drugs. This includes the impact on HIV disease progression and the response to treatment. Professor Pillay is increasingly involved with the implications of the rollout of HIV treatment in the developing world, in particular to inform the World Health Organisation's policy on HIV treatment and care. He sits on a number of UK Department of Health committees to inform NHS policy on antiviral drug resistance. Support to the NIHR can be through his expertise in virology and the use of clinical and laboratory data on large cohorts for addressing important clinical and epidemiological questions.
